Dr. Xenos Mason, a neurologist at Keck Medicine of USC

Dr. Mason is a neurologist at Keck Medicine of USC, who specializes in movement disorders and deep brain stimulation therapy.

Here’s what you won’t find on his resume.

He plays the horn and loves backpacking in the mountains.

“I enjoy hiking in the mountains with my family and friends and taking the occasional backpacking trip to national forests and parks. I’m an amateur musician and horn player in the Orchestra Nova Los Angeles (formally, the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra). I also enjoy playing chamber music with friends. I love live music and frequently attend concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, The Walt Disney Concert Hall and venues near my home in West Hollywood.”

He’s an avid reader.

“I love books. Italo Calvino and Kazuo Ishiguro are two of my favorite novelists.”

He wants to help you live well and loves meeting your family at appointments.

“I most enjoy seeing my patients over time and hearing about the things that bring them joy — vacations, new kids or grandchildren, projects and renovations, etc. My goal is always to help people to live well, and these small successes are often most rewarding. I also love getting to meet spouses, kids, grandkids or close friends; my patients and I sometimes talk about these people for months or years before they have the opportunity to attend an appointment. It is a great privilege to get a glimpse into the important relationships in my patients’ lives.”

His colleagues are his biggest inspiration.

“Medicine is very much an apprenticeship and, like many doctors, I have learned more from observing my mentors and peers than I have from formal study. I’ve been very lucky to work with incredible people over the years, and I aspire to emulate their strengths every day.”

He’s excited about finding a cure for neurodegenerative diseases.

“I would like to see disease-modifying treatments or cures for neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. We may be getting there soon!”

He likes working at Keck Medicine, because we follow through.

“Keck Medicine is constantly changing and striving to grow. It’s exciting to be part of an organization that has something to prove but then actually follows through and proves it. Neurological surgery and neurology offer patients concierge-level care. Our entire team works tirelessly to support our patients, and our good outcomes and satisfaction scores reflect this strength and dedication.”
