About Cristina AF Roman, PhD

Dr. Cristina A.F. Román is a clinical neuropsychologist and current Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology in the Department of Neurology of the Keck School of Medicine of USC (USC Keck) and Adjunct Researcher at Kessler Foundation. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (focus: Neuropsychology) from The Pennsylvania State University in 2019 after completing a pre-doctoral internship at the Charleston Consortium. Dr. Román subsequently completed two postdoctoral fellowships- a two-year clinical fellowship in Neuropsychology at Brown Medical School and a two-year National Multiple Sclerosis Society sponsored research fellowship at Kessler Foundation. Prior to her move to USC Keck, Dr. Román was a Research Scientist at Kessler Foundation and Assistant Research Professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Her research focuses on the impact of medical co-morbidities (i.e., cardiovascular risk factors) and systemic and psychosocial influences, namely healthcare-related social determinants of health (e.g., healthcare access, quality of healthcare, health literacy), on cognitive and brain aging trajectories, MS symptomology, and quality of life in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), namely those who identify from underrepresented groups (e.g., Hispanic/Latinos/as with MS), with the intention of developing effective interventions for adults aging with MS. She is dedicated to increasing the inclusion of historically underrepresented groups in training and research to improve generalizability of research results and increase access to empirically driven culturally informed care.

Dr. Román’s dedication to social justice and advocacy guides all aspects of her clinical, research, mentoring, and community service endeavors. She is an active member of the iConquerMS Minority Research Engagement Partnership Network (MREPN), iConquerMS’ Aging in MS, Engagement, and Research Committees, NMSS Hispanic/Latinx Collaborative, International Neuropsychological Society’s (INS) Cultural Scientific Interest Group, National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN), National Latinx Psychological Association (NLPA), Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC), and the Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OHMB), among many others. Dr. Román has been acknowledged for her promising work by the National Institutes of Health, Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, National Academy of Neuropsychology, and the International Society for Neuropsychology. She has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIMHD), National Academy of Neuropsychology, American Psychological Association, Hispanic Neuropsychological Society, and private donors.
