Felix and Mildred Yip Fellowship in Advanced Robotics and Laparoscopy

The Catherine and Joseph Aresty Department of Urology at the Keck School is now offering TWO fellowship positions in advanced robotic and laparoscopic surgery. Both positions are one-year commitments, where the fellows will be involved in research and intensive clinical experience in robotic and laparoscopic surgery for urologic cancers as well as benign conditions.

Abundant opportunity for basic and clinical research is available at the Keck School. Fellows will have the option of working on basic science projects with one of 7 basic science, currently doing research on various aspects of basic urologic oncology. Fellows will also have access to a fully equipped small and large animal laboratory for pre-clinical projects. The Catherine and Joseph Aresty Department of Urology has excellent clinical databases for all urologic cancers that would be ideal for fellows interested in clinical outcomes research.

The fellows are appointed as junior faculty members (Clinical Instructor in Urology) and will have appropriate responsibilities to help staff cases at Los Angeles General, as well as taking call from home. The fellow will also be expected to independently staff one outpatient clinic per week.

Candidates for this fellowship should be eligible for licensure in California (including fluoroscopy) and should have completed full training in urology. In general, graduates of ACGME-accredited residency in the US and Canada will be given preference. International graduates who are eligible for licensure may also apply.

Fellows will conduct clinical cases primarily at Keck Hospital of USC and Los Angeles General. Fellows will work directly with full-time academic faculty on both the private and county hospital services (Drs. Inderbir Gill, Mihir Desai, and Monish Aron) and with the residents and interns on each service. Fellows are expected to participate in over 250 laparoscopic/robotic cases over a 1-year period.

Interested applicants should email a CV, 3 letters of recommendation and a summary of their surgical logs to the fellowship coordinator with a copy to the fellowship directors.

Society of Urologic Oncology Fellowship

The Society of Urologic Oncology fellowship has been recognized as one of the premier training programs in the country for open surgical skills. We are now expanding the program to encompass minimally invasive and robotic techniques.

This is a comprehensive two-year fellowship in urologic oncology. Fellows will spend one year in a basic science laboratory working with one of eight basic science investigators currently doing research in one or more aspects of urologic oncology. Throughout both years, the fellows will also be involved in clinical and animal research projects.

The second year is spent on the clinical services. The clinical year includes a broad experience in all aspects of urologic oncology, including hands-on surgical experience with complex open, minimally- invasive and robotic surgeries. The fellows will work at three institutions: Keck Hospital of USC, USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Los Angeles General. The same core-teaching faculty work in all three institutions, and the fellows will have the opportunity to work with all of them. The fellow will learn both open and minimally invasive techniques (including robotic) for many of these surgeries from faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized experts in performing these surgeries. The fellows will also gain exposure to medical oncology and radiation therapy treatments for urologic cancers, participate actively in multidisciplinary conferences and work with the staff and fellows on those services on a regular basis.

Candidates for this fellowship should be eligible for licensure in California and should have completed full training in urology. In general graduates of ACGME-accredited residency in the US and Canada will be given preference. International graduates who are eligible for licensure may also apply.
