Liver Surgery

Our surgeons are skilled in both liver surgery and liver transplantation to treat liver cancer and chronic liver disease.

Expert Treatment for Liver Cancer and Advanced Liver Disease

Our surgeons offer comprehensive liver disease care for a full slate of liver conditions, from benign tumor removal to complete liver transplantation. Our multidisciplinary approach draws on the combined expertise of our surgeons, hepatologists (liver specialists) and cancer care specialists, including oncologists and radiologists.

This collaborative approach allows us to create customized care plans that fit the unique needs of every patient. No matter your liver issue, our surgeons will connect you with a targeted, innovative care plan backed by state-of-the-art surgical advances.

Treatments for Liver Tumors and Liver Cancer We Offer

Our providers routinely perform liver resection surgery, or removal of part of the liver, for patients diagnosed with noncancerous (benign) or cancerous tumors.

Our surgeons can successfully remove many benign tumors — including cysts, adenomas or hemangiomas — using laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive technique that involves only minor abdominal incisions.

More advanced cancerous tumors may require a hepatectomy, or liver removal surgery, using open (traditional) surgical procedures. Patients can be candidates for liver removal surgery as long as at least one-third of their liver remains healthy. Following surgery, the remaining, undamaged portion of their liver will regenerate, growing back to its original size in about a year.

Treatments for Liver Disease We Offer

Our experts treat advanced liver disease using a variety of methods, including surgery, transplantation and other cutting-edge procedures.

Chronic liver disease (CLD), sometimes called cirrhosis, can be caused by conditions such as:

  • Certain autoimmune or genetic conditions
  • Excessive, long-term alcohol consumption
  • Hepatitis and other viruses
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Our teams may recommend surgically removing the damaged parts of the liver before CLD progresses to liver failure in patients with these conditions.

Liver Transplant Surgery

Liver failure occurs when the majority of the liver no longer functions properly. Patients diagnosed with liver failure may require liver transplant surgery. Patients with liver cancer may also require liver transplant surgery as part of their cancer treatment plan.

During liver transplantation, surgeons remove the diseased or failing liver and replace it with part of a healthy liver from either a live donor or a recently deceased certified organ donor. In either case, the donor must match the recipient’s blood type.

Liver transplant surgery is a complex, life-saving procedure that typically requires between 5 to 12 hours to complete. Following successful liver transplantation, patients can expect to regain active, normal activities after just a few months. Our pioneering liver transplant program offers hope for patients with advanced liver cancer or end-stage CLD.
